Karen is an experienced litigator focused on civil and regulatory matters. In her diverse practice, Karen works with clients in the areas of health care, intellectual property, employment, and nonprofit organizations law. Karen has a proven record of helping clients navigate complex permitting and regulatory compliance issues. She also handles employment and commercial disputes, where her talent for thoroughly analyzing and clearly presenting the relevant facts and law helps clients assess their strategic options and achieve successful resolutions through arbitration, mediation, or in court. In the firm’s intellectual property practice, Karen helps clients ranging from start-up companies and individuals to established businesses register trademarks, and resolve disputes concerning trademarks and other intellectual property. She handles trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and litigation in federal court. Karen also enjoys working with nonprofit organizations on all facets of starting, managing, and maintaining mission-driven organizations. In addition to helping new nonprofits attain tax-exempt status, she advises established organizations on compliance with IRS regulations governing conflicts of interest, the unrelated business income tax, and lobbying and legislative activities. She also provides strategic guidance on funding and organization structure, including joint ventures with for-profit businesses, and establishing subsidiary entities. Before joining the firm in 2006, Karen practiced litigation, health care, and civil rights law at a firm in Seattle, where, among other clients, she represented the University of Washington.
